QUESTION 1
What is your favourite colour & why?
I am obsessed with the colour yellow.
It is the colour of sunshine, the light, happiness, joyfulness, positive energy, and warmth. The colour reflects my personality since I feel I was born under a ray of sunshine on the 22nd of June – the beginning of the summer. For me, the colour yellow can be combined with almost every colour other than black!
QUESTION 2
You have recently opened a summer Pop Up in Cap D’Antibes showcasing your new furniture collection, art and interior collectibles. Why Cap d'Antibes? What does this place inspire you? Why did you want to open this pop-up?
The light and the culture in this part of the world is unique. Hence, why so many famous painters as well as writers were inspired by this place.
Whilst I am staying in my house on Cap d’Antibes, I usually start my day with an early walk along Boulevard Du Cap and walking down to the sea. On one of these walks last summer, I had the idea that a gallery Pop-Up where I could show my vision of a summer house interior curated in my usual practice combining with emerging artists as well as artisan pieces of art, would be a great idea.
The stars were aligned and I was able to rent the only matching store space for 5 months in the heart of my beloved Cap d’Antibes.
I thought instantly about my favourite artwork in the Picasso Museum in Antibes which is called “La Joie de Vivre” as inspiration for the Pop-up.
This museum is a real gem, the architecture and atmosphere of the building, the art and ceramic collection as well as its views over the ocean are truly magical. La joie de vivre is such an important and iconic work of Picasso. One year after the cruel Second World War Picasso finished his work. The work reflects the positive upheaval after devastating war times, it shows light at the end of a tunnel and the muted blues and yellow colours are typical for this part of the world.
I am a very positive person myself and hence, I can identify a lot with the message of this artwork.
QUESTION 3
I love your new collection and in particular your coffee table. What inspired you to create your wonderful products?
Whilst I was working on the scheme for the Pop-Up and what furniture I will exhibit for that project, I was not able to find furniture expressing my vision to that extent. So, I decided to use the opportunity to design my own furniture pieces reflecting my vision for the Pop-Up. I created the “Wave Sideboard” reflecting the waves of the sea in combination with burl wood representing the nature in the area, rounded, organically shaped and comfortable armchairs as well as an “arty” coffee table with a blue onyx top. The shape of the coffee table top was inspired by a paint palette used by many artists in the past and present.
QUESTION 4
Where do you go for / what do you do for inspiration?
I live mostly in London where I am surrounded on a daily basis by inspirations through my gallery and museum visits, various little coffee shops and restaurants with unexpected interiors, spending time with my group of international friends.
Since I am exposed to so many inspirations in my daily life, I figured out that I need “me - time” to process these, which I do by regular walks through St. James and Hyde Park without listening to podcasts or being on the phone speaking to someone. Walking through nature is for me probably the biggest inspiration, since it brings the various puzzle pieces of my inspirations mingling in my head together to apply to specific projects or tasks.
QUESTION 5
Do you have a cherished object you would never part with? What is it & why?
We have an edition artwork from Peter Doig called “A hundred years ago” which shows a man sitting in a red canoe on the sea. Behind him the blue sky and him reflecting on the sea. The man looks at you…..almost stares… Every time, I look at the artwork, I feel the endless nature, the human being in it, the vast sky and sea, the past and the unknown future for the man and for all of us.
