I love working with Margit Wittig. She adds the 'Artful Living' to any home.

Margit Wittig is a sculptor and painter who designs and makes contemporary bespoke lighting and furniture. She launched in 2010, with commissions for handcrafted lamps. Margit studied sculpture and stone carving at the Sculpture Academy as well as metal work at Central Saint Martins. A former physiotherapist, her observations of the human form inspire her figurative bronze and resin sculpture with a nod to Brancusi and Giacometti. All these influences inform her designs which have been described by Kit Kemp as ‘curious, intriguing, classical, yet lyrical’.

QUESTION 1

What is your favourite colour & why?

My work mainly plays with the relationship between colours and how they work with each other, I would have to highlight green as an overwhelming favourite. From a putrid lime to a deep forest green, there is so much energy in the colour which I think comes from nature and the human connection to plants.

QUESTION 2

What are you working on at the moment that you find exciting?

I’m working on a series of table lights for a commercial space and the brief was to make each lamp unique yet still relate to each other. I’ve had a lot of fun with creating variations upon my signature New York lamp and my inspiration has expanded beyond this project into some exciting new products that I am yet to launch; so keep an eye out.

QUESTION 3

I love your Mayfair Chandeliers. What inspired you to create a collection?

The first signature chandelier was hung in a quaint shop in Mayfair and I think the name suited its design and elegance. I adorned the elements with an old gold patina and paired it with bronze and unsealed brass so it tarnishes over time therefore the chandelier changes along with its environment and this is a design choice throughout the Margit Wittig collection.

QUESTION 4

Where do you go for / what do you do for inspiration?

Nature is the ultimate inspiration although I of course find it in other artworks as well. Dog walks and spending time relaxing with a view are the times when I can ponder my designs without the distraction of my phone or emails. I always carry a sketchbook to jot down ideas I have on the go.

QUESTION 5

Do you have a cherished object you would never part with? What is it & why?

When I was a student I got an antique round table at auction in Vienna which I now use as a display area for my various creations. It has travelled with me to every home I’ve had and has proudly stood the test of time. It has provided multiple functions to me over the years – from dining table to display table – and I’m proud to exhibit my newest works on the well travelled, circular table.
